June ‘must read’ kids books

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Award season is here again, and if you want to find some books to really inspire your children, the shortlists for the Carnegie and Greenaway are a great place to start. We have free Opening Extracts of all the stories. First though, have a look at what else is going on here at Lovereading4kids.

We have two Authors of the Month:

Jerry Sinelli

KipperPopular author/illustrator Mick Inkpen continues to delight with characters likeWibbly Pig and Penguin Small. His creationKipper the dog is 18 years old this year and we’re featuring eight of Mick’s books to celebrate in style.

Jerry Spinelli is author of the insightful teen novels featuring Stargirl. His latest bestseller, Love, Stargirl, takes the form of the ‘world’s longest letter’ with memories of Arizona, life, and of course, love.

And some marvellous Debuts of the Month for you and your children to discover before the hoards do:

Puppet MasterPuppet Master by Joanne Owens is a fairytale mystery set in 19th century Prague. Milena’s grandmother chooses one day to relate to her granddaughter the secrets of her ancestry and her beautiful mother who disappeared.

Puppet MasterSold by Patricia McCormick is a very powerful novel, endorsed by Amnesty International, about a Nepalese girl who risks everything to escape from the harrowing depths of child prostitution. The author’s website has links to other sites if you’d like to know more about the very real, global issue.

And continuing the theme of child slavery do read Lost Riders by Elizabeth Laird about a boy sold to race camels in Dubai. Both books are harrowing but essential reading for teenagers and adults alike.
Next the start of a brilliant new series:

Hero.com and Villain.net is a fiendishly clever concept of a series and ‘anti-series’. Published simultaneously, the books will stand alone, but also overlap, to give added enjoyment to super-observant readers. In Rise of the Heroes, some teenagers stumble across a website that gives them real superpowers, but also hands them the responsibility of saving the world! One 10-year-old reviewer told us it was “thrilling” and “action-packed”.
