New Children’s Books for September

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Summer is drawing to a close, in fact for some of us Autumn is well and truly with us so as you return from your holidays, spare a thought for the characters created by September baby William Golding in Lord of The Flies, who are still stuck on their tropical island! Also born in September was legendary detective novelist, Agatha Christie. Well, we’ve been doing some detecting of our own, hard on the case to find a great list of suggested reads for kids of all ages as they get ready to go back to school. Hope you and the children enjoy selecting your reading choices as much as we have done choosing them!

Our Magical Author of the Month – Cornelia Funke

cfcfUntil now, possibly best known in the UK for her Inkheart series, our multi award-winning author of the month in September is the fabulously named magical reality wizard, Cornelia Funke. She has written much, much more than just the Inkheart books, however, and her other titles – brimming with rich fantasy and adventure – are all well worth a look for readers of 8 upwards. However, what she has just completed and is published globally on 15th September is Reckless. An extraordinary fantasy thriller set between two worlds linked by a mirror: the real world of today and a dark fairytale place, where modern technology has disastrously mixed with magic, resulting in war and corruption. It is original and utterly compelling and we do urge any child of 11+ (and even adults) to experience the storytelling power of Cornelia Funke. Just go to the site and have a browse. It’s so good we’ve also made it our MEGA Book of the Month so get onto Lovereading and check it out!

Books of the Month

September’s basket is crammed with fantastic books for kids of all ages and with our easy to use site, you’ll be able to find something in seconds! Eddie’s Toolbox is our favourite picture book of the month for 3+ year olds whilst for older readers Slog’s Dad by the multi-award winning David Almond is also the talk of the office.

Wild at Heart! – Illustrator of the Month, Catherine Rayner

We are delighted that our illustrator of the month in September is the multi award

winning Catherine Rayner. Inspired both by the many pets in her Edinburgh home (from horse to goldfish, guinea pig to cat!) and by the wilder animals in Edinburgh Zoo, Catherine has published a wonderful selection of books featuring loveable characters such as: Augustus the tiger, Norris the bear, Ernest the moose and Harris the hare. Catherine’s books are crammed with warm, colouful and wonderful illustrations and are great for all children aged 4+. Have a browse for yourself on the Lovereading site. We’re happy to bet that you’ll fall in love!

Out of This World! Our Guest Editor – Simon Bartram

Simon Bartram is the creator of the loveable Bob, The Man on The Moon and a number of other must reads too for children. Bob is, of course, the man who goes to the moon every day and keeps it tidy for the tourists! Bob is beginning to be quite important in this Universe: already there are two picture books about him, also some longer books about his adventures with his new friend Barry – these short chapter books are perfect for 6+ year olds, and now there’s even a play about him. We are featuring all his books on the site so have a browse, fall in love with Bob and get your kids hooked! In addition, Simon has very kindly agreed to be our Guest Editor this month and to share with you some of the fabulous books by other authors that have inspired him in his life so far. Take a peek.

H.I.V.E Series by Mark Walden – Our Series of the Month

hiveOur featured series of the month in September is the wonderfully gripping H.I.V.E series. When you know that ‘H.I.V.E’ stands for ‘Higher Institute of Villainous Education’, it is easy to imagine the wonderful world that author Mark Waldon has created, and the page-turning adventures within it. The stories all centre around young Otto Malpense and his fellow students of villainy as they set off on several page-turning adventures from arctic training to global domination. You’ll love these books and so will your kids!

Skullduggery in our Competition?

sdpYes, actually! We are running a great competition all this month with lots of book ghoodies to give away especially the latest book in the Skullduggery Pleasant series Mortal Coil. If you already haven’t met Skullduggery Pleasant, he is a wise-bracking detective, powerful magician, master of dirty tricks and burglary (all for the greater good, of course!) – oh, yeah and he’s also dead! He is accompanied on his adventures by the wonderfully blunt and outspoken Stephanie, his 12 year old sidekick. These brilliant books by Derek Landy are multi-award winning fiction for kids aged 9+. We have signed copies of the lastest in the series and great T-shirts to give away, so look out for them at Lovereading4kids.co.uk!

Have A Scrumdiddlyumptious Roald Dahl Day In 2010!

Finally, September 13th is Roald Dahl Day (but feel free to celebrate any time you like throughout September!). There are hundreds of events happening all around the country to get kids celebrating the World’s No.1 storyteller (see for yourself at http://www.roalddahlday.info/). We at Lovereading are wholeheartedly supporting this annual initiative and will have some Roald Dahl goodie bags to give away teeming with some of his books.

And it doesn’t end there. You can get your school involved too. Does your classroom or library have what it takes to be Roald Dahl Revolting Readers? Join the Roald Dahl Reading Relay today!

“The WHAT?“

The challenge is for kids to read three Roald Dahl books between September and December 2010. All participants can download a Roald Dahl Reading Relay Diary and, on completion of reading three Roald Dahl books, an ‘I’m a Roald Dahl Revoting Reader’ certificate! You can download everything you need to get started, as well as the Roald Dahl Challenge calendar at www.roalddahl.com

Easy Peasy! Especially as once you’ve read one of Roald Dahl’s fantastic books, you’ll want to read them all!
