The Lovereading4kids Readers’ Choice book of 2014

Monday, December 22nd, 2014

In November we asked our 600+ Kids Reader Review panel members, a lot of whom are regular book bloggers, to let us have their top 3 books of 2014; the top 10 choices then went to the public vote.

Awful Auntie, a “screechingly funny” novel by comedian David Walliams, won the Lovereading4Kids Readers’ Choice Book of the Year 2014.

Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan and Sweet Honey by Cathy Cassidy took second and third place in the children’s category respectively.

Who is Andrea Reece?

Monday, December 8th, 2014

Andrea Reece has spent all her working life in children’s books. Her first job was at Transworld Publishers back in the 1980s where, amongst other things, she ran the fan club for readers of the smash hit teen series Sweet Dreams.

She went on to work for other children’s publishers, large and small, and with authors including David Almond, Nick Butterworth, Mick Inkpen and Michael Morpurgo. In 2005 she set up children’s independent Catnip Publishing Ltd., publishing Richard and Judy favourite Scaredy Squirrel in the process, and went on to run Books for Keeps, the children’s books journal.

She is very used to odd looks from people on trains and buses who see her reading children’s books, and is still as excited as ever to discover a new children’s author. Apart from being one of the Lovereading4kids editorial experts alongside Julia Eccleshare she is also director of the children’s and young people’s programme of the FT Weekend Oxford Literary Festival.

Fame for one of our Reader Reviewers

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014

Imagine seeing what you have written in rather large letters on a poster that is in dozens of train stations around the country? Well for Alice East, age 9, a Lovereading4kids Reader Reviewer, it’s not just in her imagination as you can see from the picture below. Well done Alice for being picked to feature on the poster, by Walker books, from the hundreds of reviews written by children.

Here is Alice’s full review

This is another book in the ‘Timmy Failure’ series. It is all about Timmy’s life with his pet polar bear. If you like the other ‘Timmy Failur’e books you will enjoy this as it is another instalment in his life.

If you are a fan of ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ or Tom Gates you will be a fan of this series of books.

It is a really funny book as he does lots of silly things and gets into LOADS of trouble. He needs to keep working hard at school as he is danger of being expelled.

I am looking forward to the next Timmy Failure book as they easy to read and make me laugh a lot.

Everyone loved the South Ken Children’s Festival on Saturday 22 November 2014

Young book lovers enjoyed an exciting range of international author talks at the Institut Francais last weekend. Lovereading4kids was the proud supporter of two such events. One was a lively discussion between bestselling authors Anne Fine and Agnès Desarthe as they shared their experience of writing stories for children in both Britain and France. The second was a rare opportunity to meet scriptwriter Fabien Vehlmann (behind the latest Spirou and Fantasio adventures) and Belgian illustrator Bruno Gazzotti who talked about their collaboration on the comic series Alone and the adventures of Dodji and his squad.

All the attendees got a special Lovereading goody bag which as you can see from the photos below they thoroughly enjoyed.
