August email update

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

August is here and the holidays continue! Did you know that Hans Christian Andersen died in August 1875? Well he did, BUT our bumper-box of brilliant books for kids this month is no fairy tale! In fact, we’ve given our special Summer Reads section a brand new refresh, so the rest of the holidays can be filled with stories and activities to keep them happy ’til school starts again. Boo! Here’s what else is new…

August Books of the Month

Handily divided by age-range, our bookshelf of brilliant books for babies to big kids is packed with bright ideas this August! We absolutely love:

The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by the uber-brilliant Oliver Jeffers – Imaginative and hilarious fun that will have kids playing with crayons in a whole new way! A welcome addition to our newly refreshed Great Books for Boys section too.

And, for older readers of 9+, Michelle Paver requires little introduction, being the author of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, the first of which was Wolf Brother. Michelle’s new series Gods and Warriors set in the Greek Bronze Age, is equally brilliant. The first two The Outsiders and The Burning Shadow are out now.

Do you know anybody aged 5 through to late teen who simply loves books and would like the chance to join the Lovereading4kids Reader Review Panel? If so, please let us know – just visit our ‘Reader Review sign up page’ enter a few details and we’ll then be in touch from time-to-time with details of yet to be published titles that will then be sent through to read and review. Thank you.

Get Out! – Summer Activity Category

Don’t forget, we have a whole category (Summer Activity Books) dedicated to fun activities for kids: ‘making and doing’ indoors and out. It’s an all-weather, one-stop-shop for things to thrill kids of all ages: and it’s part of our newly refreshed Summer Reading Section. See the shelf below for a few favourites or visit the site to see them all.

Guest Editor – Lauren St John

Our Guest Editor this month grew up on a huge farm in Zimbabwe, with a host of animals, from horses to Elephants and Giraffes! Add to this her brilliant imagination, her love of a good mystery and her sense of fun and it’s no wonder that she writes great, adventurous mystery tales featuring all sorts of beasts. Her books are hugely popular with kids (aged 11+) and we are featuring them, as well as some of her own favourite books. Her latest Rendezvous in Russia is the 4th in the popular Laura Marlin series, a breathtaking; mystery adventure with sinister goings-on in glamourous surroundings.

Feeling Firsty? – Fabulous First-Time Writers!

We love discovering brand new talent and great debut titles for kids. Here’s what we’ve unearthed this month. The office favourite, partly because of its extraordinary title, is Alex, the dog and the Unopenable Door (9+):

Click and Win – It’s COMPETITION time!

Some people have a horseshoe or a rabbit’s foot for luck … all you need is a mouse! Here’s some of the great prizes up for grabs this month:

For 7+ we have 5 sets of the Stargirl Academy books a new fairy-world series for young girls.

For 11+ readers we have 10 hardback copies of a brilliant new fantasy book called The Bell Between Worlds, which is also an eBook of the Month, and a set of the

newly jacketed Power of Five Series as prizes.

14+ readers shouldn’t miss the chance to win copies of Throne of Glass and its sequel Crown of Midnight, the first two in the hottest teen fantasy series around, featuring assassin Celaena or prizes linked to City of Bones from the hugely popular Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare which has been made into a film which is out on 21 August!

And finally, fact loving animal lovers should enter our Steve Backshall competition to win one of 5 DEADLY GOODY BAGS.

Fantastic Fives – Series of the Month for 11+ readers

Anthony Horowitz’ sinister and incredibly atmospheric series of the supernatural The Power of Five, has just reached its conclusion with OBLIVION. All are now available in great value paperback and eBook – and the Summer is the perfect time to read them all! Our Kids Reader Review panel loved the series too.

Real Inspiration for Young Adult Readers

Every now and then something very special comes along and speaks to young adults in ways that no others can, inspiring them with stories that capture their imaginations for the rest of their lives. Elizabeth Wein’s WWII dramas for readers aged 14+ are two such books. A must for teens who love to read:

Code Name Verity – shortlisted for the CILIP Carnegie Medal 2013, a compelling, vivid, heart-thumping tale of friendship in adversity. And Rose Under Fire – a beautifully told, gripping journey from innocence to experience, of the wings of hope and courage under fire. Quite brilliant!

Game of Thrones? – Pah! Try Volsunga!

Carnegie Medal winner, Melvin Burgess has delved deep into his dark imagination and created a stunningly brutal dystopian world. The Volsunga Series, for at least 14+ readers (first published in 1999!)is the tale of two warring families in a London in ruins. It runs thick with blood, treachery, sex, torture, revenge and retribution. And all this from an author whose favourite book as a child was Wind In The Willows! It is both cruel and magnificent, a unique blend of mythology and sci-fi and a great read for the teen psyche. Click on the book jackets for more …

Well ahead of its time you could say but Melvin’s reason for writing was this – There was a real shortage of exciting, difficult, dangerous books for young people – the sort of thing your parents wouldn’t care to recommend to you. I hope Bloodtide will fill that gap. I wanted it to shock, stir you up, lift you up and bring you down”.
