and then something really special comes along and we get very excited! Brothers Marcus and Julian Sedgwick have created a cautionary, futuristic, very British, graphic novel adventure that could well be the Wizard of Oz of its time. We think it’s a must for all kids over 12 years. It is a complex and beautiful, light, dark and compelling story of prejudice, violence, fundamentalism and freedom. We love it and our teen reader review panel did too, with one of them saying, it is thrilling and I love the fact that it is futuristic too. I can tell that a lot of hard work has been put in this book because the pictures and the writing is perfect’.

Children’s Classics

Is it time you started collecting a library of children’s classics for your children or grandchildren? Christmas is the perfect time to give them as gifts. If so, you’ve come to the right place. Have a look at our special Classics Category and especially The Egmont Heritage list which includes some of the most highly acclaimed and bestselling children’s books of all time. Published in beautiful, high-quality hardback editions, with cloth quarter binding, head and tail bands and ribbon, the Egmont Heritage range will build into a library of some of the most famous titles in children’s literature. Some of our favourites are below.

World War One remembered

In 2014 it will be 100 years since WW1 began and even though there are now no people alive today who experienced it first-hand, its impact on the world is still apparent today. Over the next 4 years a lot of books will be published for children, and WW1 will appear more prominently in the school curriculum, so we will be selecting our favourites, both fiction and non-fiction. We hope it will inspire children never to forget the sacrifices made by their forbears. Why not check out our special category now.

Finally … Not That We’re Wishing for Winter, but …

Well, the nights are drawing in and the winter has some really fun stuff to look forward to, not least of all: Bonfire Night and Christmas! So, why not get in the mood for colder times, with this wonderful story:

Snowflakes by Cerrie Burnell (of CBeebies fame) & Laura Ellen Anderson – An enchantingly beautiful story about making friends and new beginnings and just being who you are.

And that is October at Lovereading4Kids and if you’re one of those wonderfully organised people who begin to think about Christmas presents in October then check out our Christmas category, which has just gone now live, for some inspiration!

Boxer Tricks! – Publisher of the Month, Boxer Books

We don’t always have a Publisher of the Month, no. But this month we want to give a massive and fervent ‘nod’ to 6 year old Boxer Books. In that short time they have become one of the leading international publishers of fabulous books for kids and you can find them all in our special section on our own website… or see a few real favourites on the shelf below.

A Pinch and A Punch, October’s Firsts’ of the Month

With so many great first-timers this month, it’s hard to pick a favourite. Have a look and try for yourself! – but have to admit, we do really love Missing Ellen by Natasha Mac a’Bhaird (12+). It’s a tense and tender portrayal of friendship and loss: beautifully written and completely addictive.

91214

Horse Play – Books for the Pony Mad!

‘Daddy, can I have a pony?’ A question few fathers want to hear. Well we have something that comes a close second and may keep you saddle bound showjumpers at bay (poor pun we know) for a while: a whole section crammed with horse-based stories that the Pony Mad clan will love. Recent additions include There Must Be Horses by Diana Kimpton (9+, 11+) – a real page-turner, but be prepared it is also an emotional rollercoaster that will have you verging on tears and laughing with joy. And My Friend Flicka by Mary O’Hara – a horsey classic, beautifully re published by Egmont.

Little Gems – Great Books for 5+ year olds

Publisher Barrington Stoke has a brilliant selection of books they’ve called ‘Little Gems’. Aimed at struggling 5+ year old readers, they are a wonderful one-stop shop of satisfying

stories for your little ones, helping them develop into independentreaders. Here are two that we’ve picked out for special mention:

My Friend’s a Gris-Kwok by Malorie Blackman. – Wonderfully imaginative, shape-shifting mischief! Snug by Michael Morpurgo – From an author that needs no introduction, a beautifully illustrated animal, countryside tale.

Life isn’t Lonely, I Call My Fridge Tony

You know that we are big fans of poetry and our special Poetry Category is very popular with you too. This month we are honouring comedian and poet, John Hegley. One of our favourites at Lovereading, we think it’s time we shared his brilliant, simple, hilarious and poignant genius with you and your kids! I’m a Poetato* by John Hegley (8+, 11+). It’s a very funny, zany, witty and topical collection for children, which adults will also adore.

‘Booky’ dates for your Diary

Debutant James Thorp has produced one of the funniest picture books ever! called The Weasel Puffin Unicorn Baboon Pig Lobster Race it is an hilarious, inventive and whacky way to teach children about fair play. But don’t just take our word for it. Author of the kids’ favourite; Hippospotamus, Jeanne Willis said: ‘No author likes to read picture books funnier than their own – I’m afraid this is one. It’s a stonker!‘. Enjoy!

Newly hatched imprints for teens

There’s a plethora of publishers establishing new imprints this year that are aimed at teens and young adults. There are two this month, both absolute crackers. Independent publisher Canongate has teamed up with children’s specialist Walker Books to put a range of bestselling, award-winning books into the hands of the next generation of adult readers. The imprint, Walker Canongate, launches this month with four titles – Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, Niccolo Ammaniti’s I’m Not Scared, Kelly Link’s Pretty Monsters and Matt Haig’s The Radleys.

The second is from Puffin who has launched Razorbill (another small seabird for the non-twitchers among you), to cater for the astronomical rise of teenage fiction. Three newly hatched novels for you to enjoy in the launch list include The Summer I Turned Pretty and The Other Countess.

Happy 80th birthday Swallows and Amazons!

Finally, if you have a youngster that’s heading for school this Autumn then do take a look at the terrific Usborne Very First Reading series – we feel they’re a terrific way of helping your child to read and gain in confidence prior to going to school. That said, do continue with the sharing of picture books with your youngsters as too often these are spurned by parents when children are too young.
