Almond, Rosen and Ness nominated for Astrid Lindgren award

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

UK authors David Almond, Michael Rosen and Patrick Ness, alongside specialist children’s bookshop Letterbox Library, are among a total of 197 candidates nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) 2015.

The names were announced 9 October at the International Frankfurt Book Fair by ALMA chair Boel Westin.

Candidates come from all over the world. As well as Almond, Rosen and Ness, the nominated UK authors are Allan Ahlberg, Raymond Briggs, Melvin Burgess, Aidan Chambers, Susan Cooper, Michael Foreman, Neil Gaiman, Maurice GleitzmanShirley Hughes, Michael Morpurgo and Meg Rosoff.

Aidan and Nancy Chambers and Margaret Meek Spencer were nominated for their work in promoting children’s reading, and Letterbox Library was shortlisted for its work in championing diversity in children’s literature.

The SEK 5 million (£431,000) award is made every year for a long-term commitment to children’s literature and is in honour of Astrid Lindgren, the Swedish author of Pippi Longstocking who died in 2002.

Westin, the incoming chair of the ALMA jury said “I am so excited to be taking charge of the jury’s activities. We are all looking forward to learning more about the works and accomplishments of the nominees.”

The list includes 50 first-time nominees among a total of 197 candidates from 61 countries.

The 2015 laureate will be announced on 31 March 2015.

September Books of the Month

We have a burgeoning bucket of Books of the Month this September Have a look at the shelf below but we urge you not to miss our Teen Mega Book of the Month More Than This (14+) from, multi award, winning Patrick Ness. A superbly written, enthralling and provocative story around the profound questions of adolescence.

Mega Meg! – Author of the Month: Meg Rosoff

Author of many much-loved and prize-winning books for children aged 12+. Born in the USA, Meg Rosoff has adopted good old Blighty as her home, and we are very pleased she has! Take a moment to discover her brilliant, incisive and honest writing. She tells us that what she really wants to be when she grows up is; ‘the head gardener in Regents Park’ … knowing her, she may just do it, too. Her latest, Picture Me Gone is a brilliantly atmospheric coming-of-age road-trip where the journey can be more revealing than its destination.

Are Books Your Bag?

BOOKS ARE MY BAG is a nationwide campaign, supported by a raft of book loving celebrities, to focus on bookshops that Lovereading is very proud to support as we have always looked to emulate, online, the amazing service that local bookshops give readers – and now more than ever they need your support.

So, on 14 September bookshops nationwide will be throwing a Big Bookshop Party to mark the launch of Books Are My Bag. Why not get involved by visiting your local book shop to buy a book – perhaps after having a look at some recommended reads on Lovereading4kids or Lovereading. There are sure to be lots of exciting events going on.

Visit Lovereading4kids to find your local bookshop or the Books Are My Bag website for more info.

Double Debut Delight

This month we are featuring two brilliant debuts. Iremonger: Heap House (9+) is a the first in a superb gothic trilogy which will appeal to fans of Lemony Snicket. Full of fantasy and magical realism our Reader Review Panel loved it – ‘It’s exciting and has a brilliant cliffhanger ending I’m itching to read the next one.’

And Soulmates by Holly Bourne (14+). ‘an impossible choice between the end of the world, or a life without love…’ A young author with a fearless freshness. Perfect for fans of Louise Rennison, Sophie McKenzie and Cassandra Clare.

Winning Ways … September Competitions!

We’ve 2 great prizes up for grabs this month:

Stars & Stars: Stealing the Show (9+) by Laura & Luke Jennings – Fun, thrilling, insightful, catty adventures in a Performing Arts boarding school.. Think Glee! We have 5 sets of both books to give away.

How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff – The awesome novel form our Author of The Month has also been made into a movie! We have copies of the book AND a £25 cinema voucher to give away. The film is out in October so you’ve time to read the book first!

A Fabulous SuCHESStion! – Chess for Children

As the nights draw in, here’s something to fire their imagination, focus their minds and give them a great, enjoyable skill they’ll use for the rest of their lives. Welcome the new Chess champion in your family! We’re already rooked … sorry, hooked.

The Batsford Book of Chess for Children is brilliant and full of character-based, fun and an educational introduction to everything chess.

‘D’ is for ‘Dahl’. ‘D’ is for ‘Day’ … 13Sept. is Roald Dahl Day!

roald_dahl_day_logoYup! A whole day dedicated to the brilliant, well-loved and unrivalled creations of the late, great Roald Dahl with this year’s theme being Mischief and Mayhem. There’s loads to get involved with. You can dress up for the day, plunder your party pack and join the characterful Puffin Virtually Live for starters! It’s also the 30th anniversary of The Witches (one of our faves!) and the 25th anniversary of Matilda. We’ve got special editions of both for you to celebrate with!

Life before Mortal Instruments

Proof that two-finger-typers can still make prolific novelists, Cassandra Clare (She’s the one who wrote the book City of Bones which is now the hot Summer Film … impressed now?) has turned out another spectacular series for teen readers. Infernal Devices is set in a Victorian England threatened by Demons.

Shadow-hunting, passion, enchantment, danger and sass: this is a real belter of a series. The final chapter; Clockwork Princess is out now in paperback, but you can discover the whole lot here.

Hungry after Hunger Games – Try the Lorien Legacies

Four books, one Earth and a battle to save humanity. Written for young adults but with the power to grip older ones just as much, we LOVE this dystopian earth-endangered series by Pittacus Lore that began with the book, now film, I am Number Four. Now, Pittacus Lore is a Loric Elder, from the Planet Lorien, which is three hundred million miles away. He is approximately ten thousand years old. He has been to earth hundreds of times, and he is here now. Now you know.

Time to Read – Bridge the Gap between pictures and words

time-to-read-jkt_spdA perfect series to bridge the gap between picture books and reading books.
