Children’s Summer Reading for July

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

Our Summer Reading selection has been hand-picked by Julia Eccleshare, our ‘expert voice’ behind all the brilliant book choices here at Lovereading4kids and, she is also the Children’s Books Editor of The Guardian.

Read on to find out more and to discover who has just won the prestigious Branford Boase Award for a debut novel. It’s a novel we’ve been raving about even before it was published last year.

The best children’s Summer Reading

Julia Eccleshare said, ‘this year has been such fun putting together a list of titles to get children, from toddler to teenager, inspired to read over the Summer Holidays’. We’re sure children of all ages will have a great deal of fun reading every one of them. Some are from well-known and well-loved children’s authors, others are from exciting new authors. They are all without exception fantastic reads.

Our Summer Reading section is conveniently broken down by age or just scroll down to the bottom of this email to see our personal favourites from the summer reading selection based on the age ranges you have told us you want to know more about.

If you want even more of a choice you could try our special sections for, reluctant readers, books that are dyslexia friendly, our Fantastic Fiction category or check out those titles we regard as ‘Must Reads’. As a parent you may even feel summer is the time to get your child hooked on a character that you yourself enjoyed as a child? – so, have a look at our Classics section or the wonderful timeless adventures of Tintin and his canine friend Snowy – re-launched in June 2009.

Branford Boase Winner just announced

Prize-winners are always a safe bet too, not least the winner of the Branford Boase debut award that has just been announced – The Traitor Game by B R Collins – is an ambitious teenage novel about the problematic relationship between two school boys, interwoven with an elaborate fantasy world they have created.

Children’s writing competition

Does your child enjoy writing or are you looking for a way to get your kids writing as well as reading during the holidays, then look no further than a terrific writing competition – the Usborne Young Writers’ Award – you’ll find details of it in our ‘Fantastic Fiction’ page.

The Rainbow Orchid:

The Adventures of Julius Chancer

An ambitious graphic-novel combining classic storytelling with cinematic artwork à la Tintin. A brilliant roller coaster adventure for boys and girls of all ages.

Ghost Hunter

Michelle Paver

The 6th and final book of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series – for edge of the seat action, adventure and mystery there is no equal.

Darke Academy 1:

Secret Lives

The first book of a brand new series. Cassie Bell begins her time at an elite paranormal academy with more than it’s share of sinister secrets. Fans of the Twilight series shouldn’t miss it.

So, before you pack your suitcases or stuff the family car, remember that books can be taken anywhere in the world, they don’t need batteries, and they don’t mind the odd dropped blob of ice cream… perfect. Happy Reading

MEGA this month is Osbert the Avenger by Christopher William Hill the first book in the Tales from Schwartzgarten series. Perfect for 9+ readers.

Macabre and gruesome but wickedly funny, this is a dark story of one boy’s determined quest to destroy those who have hurt him and his family. Osbert Brinkhoff is the unlikeliest of avengers. Like Roald Dahl – but different! we love it and we think, and hope, you will too!

Singing the Praises… of special note

We just HAVE to mention the wonderful 7 book series The Dragon Chronicles by Chris D’Lacey. If your kids haven’t discovered them yet – 9+ year olds will love them – they are in for a treat that will keep them reading, imagining and enthusing for months! Amazing characters in magically layered worlds, so real and yet beyond imagination. Talking of which…

…Leads us neatly on to a sparkling if slightly salty trilogy by ocean-loving, Julia Jones. These round-UK adventures under sail were inspired by Swallows and Amazons and were even partly scribed on Arthur Ransome’s old boat, Peter Duck, which Julia owns! They are wonderful stories for kids aged 9+. There is also a new edition of Peter Duck, part of the Vintage Children’s Classics series, is also out this month – perfect timing.

April Children’s Book recommendations

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Hi again and welcome back to Lovereading4kids, where you’ll find terrific books to help your kids build up their reading momentum. It only takes a few great stories to get lodged in their imaginations and they’ll be bookworms for life! Our Guest Editor this month, William Nicholson, for example, says that books like The Sword in the Stone kick-started his lifelong passion for books.

The powerful mind behind the Demon Headmaster – Author of the Month Gillian Cross

Gillian is most famous for hypnotising kids with her Demon Headmaster series, but her new book, Where I Belong, is just as spellbinding. Guns, bandits and supermodels feature in a riveting story that spans the entire world.

It’s not to be missed by anyone of 11+, while younger children should definitely grab her Demon Headmaster titles.

Illustrator of the Month Brian Wildsmith

Brian Wildsmith is without doubt one of the foremost children’s book illustrators of the 20th Century and so we’re thrilled to bring together a large body of his work in celebration of his 80th birthday this year. His picture books exudes warmth, feeling, exuberance, and imagination and when you open any one of them it is as if he has invited you to step into an art gallery. Generations of children and their parents have pored over his books as further generations will do for years to come.

A Bookshelf not to be missed

Our Books of the Month bookshelf is chock full of some absolute gems, ranging from new editions of timeless classics to new titles for every age range.. There’s an extract of every one so

William’s impressive CV includes writing and co-writing such big-screen smashes as Shadowlands and Gladiator. His books for teenagers are equally as exciting, and his new story, Rich and Mad (for readers 14+) is a beautiful and compelling tale of first love and first sex.

But, as our Guest Editor this month, you can also find out about the books that inspired William on his own writing journey right here.

Ology books – Vampireology and the true history of ‘the fallen’

The Ologies’, as they’ve come to be known, are truly fantastical books about anything and everything -from Spyology and Oceanology to Dragonology and Wizardology. They have been capturing imaginations for a while now, and the new book, Vampireology, is sure to thrill and delight.

David Almond wins the Hans Christian Andersen Award

This month sees the 205th birthday of the legendary Hans Christian Andersen, who certainly knew how to spin a good yarn – his immortal Fairy Tales, which include Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling, and The Little Mermaid, have been delighting children for 185 years. And some of the new books below are so good they might be around for the next 185…

Appropriately then, the winner of the most prestigious prize in international children’s literature, the Hans Christian Andersen Award, has just been announced. David Almond deservedly took the prize – his incredible body of work has made, and will continue to make, a lasting contribution to children’s literature.

Mid September Newsletter – Parenting Books

Friday, September 18th, 2009

What a busy month September is! As well as all the work to get kids back to school, the publishing world really picks up pace after

the summer break. In this mid month newsletter we have a brand new ‘parenting section‘ as well as exciting additions to Real Reads, Children’s Classics and a fresh range of dyslexia-friendly books.

Questions answered and challenges resolved for parents

We all want our children to grow up well rounded and happy but there are lots of challenges facing parents on the way, from the youngest baby to the turbulent teenager, and no quick fix solutions. Books can help but there are so many available it’s hard to choose. So we’ve been speaking to parents and experts to find which have helped them. The best of these titles are now in our new Parenting Books category. Find out more today and we hope you find them useful.

This month’s highlights not to miss

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness win prizes with Lovereading Author of the Month Hilary McKay
Mustang Mountain

Epic, easy to read classic stories with just 64 pages

Real Reads are retellings of some of the world’s best-loved works of literature – skilfully shortened, simplified and illustrated so they keep true to the plot and feel of the original but can be enjoyed by less experienced or time-starved readers. We’ve added some new gems to the category for you to check out, including Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights.

A dozen fresh Dyslexia-friendly titles

Making good reads accessible to every child is one of our missions here at Lovereading4kids. So we are excited to announce 12 new titles to our Dyslexia category, all printed on cream paper with an easy to read typeface . To help you choose, the books are split into interest age sub-categories and, of course, you have free Opening Extracts as well as 25% off the RRP.

Seven superb Pre-Publication exclusives

We had to stop ourselves going rather mad with alliteration but it was hard with so many (seven) superb October titles to show to you ahead of the crowds. New titles from Michael Morpurgo and Geraldine McCaughrean to name just two. Find out more today and pre-order any that take your fancy.

Pre-School Prize winners

The Early Years Book Awards are one of the most prestigious in the pre-school area. They have awards for the best Books and Illustrators and unsurprisingly we have told you about most of them already on Lovereading4kids. However, you can now see all the shortlisted books in our “Prize Winners category“.

Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy – New Eoin Colfer book

30 years ago The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy burst into our lives via the radio – and over the years it’s been a series of books, a TV show and even a film. Now 30 years on Eoin Colfer has picked up Douglas Adams’ mantle and has written a sequel ‘And Another Thing…‘ which is due out in October. Find out more about this and the hilarious original series of books in our special section and have a chance to win lots of pan galactic goodies.

Discover unpublished authors or find an audience for your own literary talents

Our sister website, Lovewriting.co.uk, is a showcase for independently published authors who haven’t yet been picked up by major publishing houses. Browse the free Opening Extracts of the children’s category, and see if you can discover the next Michael Morpurgo or J K Rowling! We think we’ve found one already and he’s only 11 years old – Will Goddard – and his second novel The Golden Triangle is just out and the whole book is available to read exclusively through Lovewriting.

Or, have you or someone you know written a book? Lovewriting.co.uk steers you through the publishing process and helps you find an audience. You can even create your own micro site to promote your own book.

Write a story for World Book Day 2010

Finally, how would your child like to finish a story started by Anthony Browne…or Francesca Simon, or Andy McNab or any of the amazing authors celebrating next year’s World Book Day? If you want to be part of the World Book Day Short Stories competition make sure your child’s school registers, before 2 Oct 2009. Click here to visit the website and forward the link to your childs school. Winning stories will be published in a special anthology in March 2010.
