New Children’s Books for July

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

Welcome to summer from Lovereading4kids! July is the month that children’s (and adults’) favourite J.K. Rowling has her birthday. It’s also the school holidays and your kids have all that time on their hands! Why not help us help you to fill some of those sunny days with great reading for them to dive into? Our special Summer Reading section makes it even easier for you and your kids to find that perfect adventure this summer. Read on to find out more …

Author of the Month Maggie Stiefvater

Our musically gifted Author of the Month is the best-selling Maggie Stiefvater (she plays the celtic harp, you know). The Virginia, USA, based mother of two (who admits that she became a writer because you can work in pyjamas) has published the third in her Wolves of Mercy Falls series, following the lives of werewolves, Sam and Grace. In Shiver, they found each other, in Linger they fought to be together and now, in Forever, the stakes are even higher. All the titles in this series, as well as Maggie’s other novels – the fantastical, dark faerie tales Ballad and Lament – are featured on the site and all have extracts for you to download for free! We also have 5 proof copies of her latest book, The Scorpio Races, to give away – it’s not published until October so the winners will get to read the whole thing early!

Hold Fire on Doubt! Our Guest Editor, Anne Fine

Well, they don’t come much better than this! Our multi award-winning Guest Editor this month is the brilliant Anne Fine. Winner of numerous accolades including the Carnegie Medal, Anne is the creator of the loveable Mrs. Doubtfire. Her novel The Tulip Touch won the Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year Award and was adapted for TV by the BBC. Her latest book, The Devil Walks, is a deliciously dark, gripping and surprising gothic tale in which a boy’s hidden past comes to life. This and Anne’s previous titles are all available on the site. What’s more, Anne has agreed to share with us some of the books that have influenced her over the years.

Horrid Henry Leaps from Page to Screen

We expect your kids are too. To celebrate, we have 2 tickets to give away to the premiere … yes … the premiere on 24 July, but you’ve not got long to enter as the competition closes 15 July! We’ve also given the naughty boy his very own category. Click here to take a look.

Last week saw the winners of two of the biggest children’s book awards announced.

The Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration went to the utterly captivating Farther by Grahame Baker-Smith.

The Carnegie Medal went to the spine-tingling, page-turning Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness.

If your child reads one book this Summer then please make it one of these…

So that’s the summer wrapped up for you! We’ll be back in balmy August with more great ideas, competitions and new titles. In the meantime, enjoy the sunshine and Happy Reading!

Football fever, Judy Moody, Grubtown Tales and much more.

Monday, May 17th, 2010

With the May half term not far away, why not take a look at some of our new features on the kids site and choose some amazing reads to keep your children engrossed in a book and not a video game. We have books with a footie theme, graphic novels that aren’t comics, some great ideas to do outside and the shortlists for two of the biggest book awards in the children’s market….

World Cup 2010 – could it kick-off your kids’ reading?

We’ve brought together some picture books and novels for kids of all ages to enjoy whilst the World Cup is on. Each one has football as its theme and perhaps even the most reluctant readers will get reading on the back of football. Visit our special page of stories about the beautiful game, and use World Cup fever to help your kids love reading too.

This month’s highlights

Just click on the banners below for instant access to our absolute top reads. In particular don’t miss Unhooking the Moon, our Mega Book of the Month, Philip Ardagh, who writes madcap mayhem for boys, or for girls classic Judy Moody.

Welcome to the DFC Library – another class of comic

The DFC was a high-quality, weekly comic featuring some of the very best storytellers and artists in the world – including Philip Pullman and Nick Sharratt. Boys and girls aged 8-12 absolutely loved it but sadly the plug has been pulled on it for the time being, so instead the owners of the DFC comic have brought together in book form three of the comic strips featured in the DFC. Called The DFC Library they’re great and you can check them all out here.
