one small step
One small step for Mankind….

Few people can fail to have missed the fact that 2009 is the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing. So we feel it is particularly appropriate to celebrate by enthusing some youngsters about Space right here at Lovereading4kids. If you think about it children aged around 9+ are going to be the generation that are likely to be the first to walk on Mars! So if you think you have a budding astronaut then take a look at our small but perfectly formed selection of titles. One Small Step is our personal favourite in the Lovereading4kids office.

Finally, with Father’s Day just around the corner, we’ve selected one truly gorgeous book that stood out from the crowd to such a degree that it’s the only title we’ve selected for you in celebration of father’s Day. Do look at the delightful On our Way Home by Sebastien Braun as it would make a lovely gift and a beautiful book to read out loud.

So there we go – a whole host of marvellous adventures and misadventures to keep your kids reading well into summer and beyond. Visit Lovereading4kids to find out more

Puppet Master and The Silver Blade, both historical novels of the highest order and Lifegame and The Resistance, both of which are a frightening reminder of how power, in the wrong hands can become a frightening weapon of destruction. 10+ year olds will enjoy all of these. It’s wonderful too, to see the return of Pongwiffy, a witch of bad habits to be enjoyed by a new generation of young readers of 7+ and for smaller boys and girls the wonderful Littlest Dinosaur and Lulu’s Clothes.

And, talking of favourite books:

The position of Children’s Laureate is nearly 10 years old and the first five holders of this illustrious post – Quentin Blake, Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson and the current Michael Rosen – have each chosen their 7 all-time favourite children’s books. So, why not visit our special section to find out which books fired the imagination of some of the top children’s writers of today, first as children and later as adults.

Just as our Children’s Laureate feature guides you to some timeless classics, did you know we have a whole section on the site dedicated to books that we think will grow old gracefully and will affect a new generation as powerfully as the generation before? Simply Essential Reading. Updated regularly and conveniently categorized by age why not find out more today?…

We hope you and your children enjoy the books we’re recommending at least half as much as we’ve enjoyed selecting them. And don’t forget we also love hearing from you so do let us have any suggestions you have to make our website even better and last but by no means least a reminder to enter our free monthly prize draws to have the chance to win some exclusive book goodies.

Happy reading for you and your kids from the team at Lovereading4kids!

Darwin Day, Secret of Moonacre prizes and much more

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

We hope your children are having as much fun reading the fantastic array of children’s literature that we selected for you this month as we did when we were making the selection. The power of the story is so important and we only choose those books that really provide that unique something that makes it different or special from the rest.

Next a classic children’s book – The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge – that is about to be released as a film called The Secrets of Moonacre. The book is enchanting and we have an exclusive, free to enter, prize draw where you can win a stunning slipcase edition of the book together with some movie goodie bags!

Prize winning books are always a good place to start if you are stuck for a book to choose from and this month our prize winning section is overflowing with a range of books from the Costa and the Marsh Award for Books in Translation.

The winner of which Toby Alone was announced on 20 January. [add in some copy about the book] Find out more today.

Also did you know that if Charles Darwin were alive he would be 200 on 12 Feb 2009. To celebrate this massively influential scientist and visionary we have a small selection of titles for children that bring his life and exploits to life. Visit our special section to find out more.

And don’t forget to have a look at the other key books this month

Finally, race headlong into the new year and keep ahead of the crowds, by discovering our latest exclusive Pre-Publication titles: All three will we believe be heading for the shortlists of the major awards this year, so why not get in there early.

Henderson Boys – The Escape by Robert Muchamore.

Author of the bestselling Cherub series has a new adventure series about child spies helping the British Secret Service in World War Two.
